We are often oblivious to who we really are and why. Taking the time to assess these aspects of our lives can be important to our effectiveness in life and the many roles that we play. It can also be key to living a maximized and full life. Many times we, and most of the people around us, are operating on autopilot. We live in a very busy society. Things are hectic and we face many demands. The effort it takes to juggle those demands on a daily basis can distract us from reflecting on the reality of our situations, obtaining adequate feedback, and subsequently making changes.

Here are a few things that you may find helpful to consider and apply:

Become Aware of Conditioning

The reason we do not often assess our attitude and behavior is conditioning. We develop a way of seeing the world that is often difficult to recognize or change. Taking the time to assess our current state and reflect on conditioning, that often occurs over a long period of time, can be exactly what we need on the journey of personal and professional growth and fulfillment.

Look in the Virtual Mirror

Most of us begin the day looking in the mirror. Are we excited about what we see? There is often work that needs to be done to get the day started and ended well. The great thing about this is that it can cause us to consider where stand. We also have the opportunity to think about how we will live and lead each day. That is also true as we consider where we are relative to where we want to be. It begins with looking in a “mirror” and assessing the current state. Who am I? What have I accomplished thus far in my life? What has caused me to excel or miss the mark? What is hindering my progress? When you have clear answers to these questions, consider what you will do about your situation.

Seek Input From Those You Love, Lead and Serve

Assessing and defining our current state is something that will take careful thought and planning as well as introspection and transparency. It may also require input from others or the use of assessment-related tools. If you are seeking a few ideas, here are some questions that you may consider asking yourself and others.

  • What are my strengths and strong points?
  • What are my weaknesses and areas of opportunity?
  • What else would you like for me to know?

These three questions can be helpful as you seek to assess your current state and obtain feedback. I often ask these questions, among others, when gathering feedback while assessing my own performance. Also, I recently incorporated these questions into my work with clients. When I work with someone, I ask them to meet with a few of their superiors, subordinate(s), and peer(s) and ask these questions. This helps them become comfortable with asking for feedback, and can help others become more comfortable providing it. Growth occurs on both sides. If they are uncomfortable doing so, I often take on the role of interviewer. The most important thing here is to get candid feedback that can be considered and used to develop a plan for moving forward.

Make it a priority to consider your current state and don’t hesitate to get help if needed. Taking this very important step can lead you on a journey of growth that could increase your impact at home, in your community and the world.
