Evolving into your best self won’t happen by accident, but if you know where you are, how you got here and where you want to go, this primer on HOW to change can put you on the right path.

Step 1: Define What Success will Look Like for YOU

“What is success?” is a question each person should ask themself. Success is achievable if we define it for ourselves and if we are intentional about aligning our idea of success with our purpose, vision and mission.

Step 2: Assess Where You Are

The effort it takes to juggle the demands on us can distract us from reflecting on our situation, obtaining adequate feedback, and making changes.

To start assessing your current state, ask yourself these questions:

  • Who am I?
  • What have I accomplished?
  • What has caused me to miss the mark?
  • What is hindering my progress?

When you have clear answers, consider what you will do about your situation. This will take careful thought and planning, as well as introspection and transparency.

Step 3: Recognize Past Conditioning

To overcome conditioning, first you must identify it. This can be challenging, especially as it can be so hard to get candid feedback from friends, family and colleagues.

One area of conditioning is self-image. How do you see yourself and why do you see yourself that way?

When you are alone, consider who you are and the vision you hold for your life. If that vision is negative and self-defeating, you have work to do.

Step 4: Live on Purpose

Asking “Why am I here?” can be a life-changing question. Finding your why means getting clear on what you want to accomplish, and what your legacy will be.

The challenge then becomes how to live that purpose out—starting today. Living from a place of purpose fosters passion and a strong desire to make a difference. It also helps in recognizing and overcoming challenges and distractions that impede progress.

Here are some questions that can help you define your “why”:

  • What are my gifts?
  • What am I passionate about?
  • What are some of the needs I have identified in the world?
  • What contributions would I like to make to the world during my time here?

Becoming clear on your purpose can help motivate you to step beyond what has been and move toward what can be.

Step 5: Clarify Essential Life Priorities

We are constantly forced to make decisions regarding our priorities. These can be

  1. spiritual and ethical
  2. family and home
  3. health and fitness
  4. mental and educational
  5. social and cultural
  6. career and business
  7. finance and money

Carefully review and think about your priorities, then determine what areas of your life need more focus and attention.

Steps 6: Set and Act on Meaningful Goals

The essential steps in goal-setting are

  • Establish SMART goals aligned with your personal mission statement in all areas of life.
  • Develop action steps for each goal, and consider the benefits to be gained from moving forward, as well as the losses to be avoided.
  • Add deadlines for action and determine who will hold you accountable for achieving them. Coaching and accountability are important parts of the process. Identify a competent coach or inspiring mentor.

Step 7: Celebrate Success

It is important to take time to recognize and enjoy your progress and accomplishments. Taking time to celebrate the achievement of a goal can be motivational and inspirational.

It doesn’t have to be grand or expensive: meeting a sibling for coffee, taking a walk in your favorite park or catching up with an old friend can all be meaningful celebrations
